While I was at school...
Merlin (the cat) is acting strangely. He was out all night and when MamaGoddess let him in this morning, he went to sleep on the easy chair, and stayed put until Plumie came home from Target and kicked him out and then he was walking "slow and not right." Then it appeared as though he couldn't walk up the stairs, and Plumie went to get him some water and his litter box, and when she came back he'd had gone upstairs and into Mom's room. He is now hiding between the wall and the bed. Meanwhile, Lola was sniffing the chair and step he had been on, and shaking her head all over the place and opening and closing her mouth the way she does when she is scared. When she saw Plumie, she looked up at her and meowed a bit. I imagine she was going 'Merlin'snotwellandit'sscaryandIthinkhegothurtandthisisveryupsettingtomebecauseI'myoung.' Or something. We've decided to wait at least a couple hours before doing anything, but here's the deal: he doesn't have his rabies shots because we suck. (Apparently the responsibility was handed off ot Plumie, but it just didn't get done. He is fixed. We suck and we're irresponsible pet-owners, I know.) So now we're agonizing over what to do because we don't want to take him to a vet when he hasn't had his shots.
And now apparently, he's making gurgly noises.
Advice?
ETA: Ok, he's come out and is now under the wicker chair in my mom's room. He's very scared, (he came out few steps, then backed up several times, etc.) and he was limping very badly. There's some dark matted spots like something had dried on his fur on his body, on the same side as the leg he was favoring. He lay down on his side, so I couldn't see that side anymore, but I felt him all over for broken bones and such and he didn't protest at all. I got a wet tissue and rubbed it on the dried stuff thinking that if it was blood, the tissue would come up red, but it didn't. But I was at an awkward angle, so I can't say for sure. The last time I felt him in that area he lifted his head and made a 'cut that out' sound. Not and 'ouch!' sound. Will probably update this entry again later. I guess I'm a neurotic cat lady.
ETA2: Debbie, our neighbor just came over and asked if we had a grey kitty and said she saw him backed against a tree at six am with a coyote circling him. She scared the coyote away, and let George(OtherNeighbor)'s dog Raider out to keep the Coyote away. She said she tried to talk to Merlin and calm him down, but that he was very scared. I just went back upstairs and Merlin is on MamaGoddess' bed, which is very high, so he can jump of climb on that leg. I felt him all over again, with a better angle and he didn't make a sound or a sudden move like he was hurting. Plumie still wants to take him to the vet. I think she feels bad about his shots.
ETA3: I can't find any injury on him and he doesn't make any hurt noises when we squeeze him all over. But he hasn't eaten or drank anything all day. If this persists tomorrow, we are taking him to the vet.

I recommend the vet. And if they say anything about the missing shots, blame it on your crazy Aunt Betty.
