It happened innocently enough. Soon enough too. Deacon had a nightmare. He came to crawl into bed with his daddy, as per usual, and found that Darth Vader was already in his bed. This wasn’t really alarming in and of itself, since Darth Vader had been around a lot the last few months, and was often seen kissing Daddy good morning before breakfast. It did raise a few questions for Deacon. However, evil orangutans awaited him in his bed, and he decided his questions could wait. He crawled up the bed to lie between the two men.

The next morning, Deacon woke up before Hayden and Ryan and went to Ava’s room to put his questions to her. Ava gave them considerable thought before deciding that they should ask Daddy.

“Is Haydie our new daddy now?” Ava asked while Hayden poured milk in her cereal. The milk almost slipped out of his hands, sloshing across the counter. He bit down on a cuss word. Ryan choked on his coffee.

“Umm….” they said in unison.

“Well, we kind of….”

“I think we need to….”

They both trailed off again. Ava gave a sigh that was clearly meant to express the excruciating length and breadth of her suffering due to the hopeless idiocy of the adults in her life, and began explaining to them, in very calm and patient tones, that some families had two daddies and that that was perfectly fine. It was also fine to have two daddies and a mommy, which was what they would have if Hayden and Ryan were to answer in the affirmative. When both men remained palpably tense and uncomfortable, she went on to elucidate that when two people slept in the same bed a lot, it meant that they loved each other and sometimes had kids. She and Deacon were the kids, Ryan and Hayden slept in the same bed just like two perfectly fine daddies of a perfectly fine family would, ergo: was Hayden their new daddy?

Ryan paid careful attention to this educational lecture and once Ava had finished, he said, “Yes, that’s very true. But Hayden and I need to talk in private before we can answer you.” Of course, it couldn’t be that simple.

“Why?” Ava demanded.

“Yeah, how come, Daddy?” Deacon made his voice heard for the first time during the conversation. He looked Hayden up and down and said “I think he’s like our other daddy. I snuggled with you last night! And I dinnit have any more bad dreams.” He lowered his voice to a conspiratory whisper. “Only daddies can keep bad dreams away.”

“That was you, you rascal!” Hayden ruffled his hair as he walked around the table. “Finish your cereal.” He took Ryan’s arm and pulled him into the dining room, closing the door enoughto obtain a measure of privacy, but leaving it open enough to keep an eye on the kids. (“Mommies can do that too!” “Nuh-uh! Only daddies, and ‘sides, I’m pretty sure Haydie isn’t our mommy!”)

Ryan took a deep breath.

“Look, I’m sorry about that, they have a book on families, and…”

“It’s ok.”

Ryan just about swallowed his own tongue.

“It… it is?” Hayden stared at the floor.

“Umm…yeah. If…” He sighed and flushed and looked up into Ryan’s eyes. “If you’ll have me, I mean.”
